Yep, Sol Ring is still near the top of the list, which means they didn’t give us much in the way of high value reprints. The highest valued reprints are Fluctuator, The Locust God, Karametra, Arcane Signet, Lightning Greaves, and Sol Ring. Is this year any better than the last two? Well, not really. The value of the reprints in these things has been a bone of contention since at least 2018. Honorable mentions go to Shabraz & Brallin, Kathril, Xyris, Haldan & Pako, Tidal Barracuda, and Ethereal Forager. Everyone loves to get a little extra somethin’. That activated ability is probably not usable very often, but it’s still nice that it’s there. I love that this card is powerful and efficiently costed. If you were to copy a spell, copy it an additional time. And we’ll do that by looking at my five favorite new cards. Should we talk about some good things about these decks? Yes, please, let’s look on the positive side. I’ll probably let my kid have them.Īnd now for Something a Little less Whiny I’m also mad that I preordered all five of these decks and I’m going to have 15 of these cards sitting in boxes forever because I have no intention of using them. I hate them because the designers chose to put three of these into each of the pre-cons and none of them synergize with any of the pre-con strategies. They’re not very good, but I wouldn’t call them bad either. This is fine if the decks are all just playing against each other, but out in the wild it’s very problematic.Īnd for my final grape-flavored gripe, I want to talk about these Impetus cards. This seems strange that the non-green decks would have the most efficient ramp suites, but it leads me to believe that the three green decks were intentionally given slower ramp packages to prevent them from overrunning the non-green decks. ![]() Ruthless Regiment and Timeless Wisdom, although only having 9 ramp cards, easily have the most efficient ramp suites with most of the ramp cards costing two or less. Each deck has Sol Ring and Arcane Signet, easily the two most efficient mana rocks for casually budgeted Commander decks, but the rest of the ramp package for each deck varies in number, cost, and effectiveness. The quality of the ramp suite in these decks is all over the place. It seems the designers of Commander pre-cons are dead set on giving us the cheapest possible lands each time, despite the fact that they showed us with the Brawl pre-cons that including a shock land is perfectly reasonable in these kinds of products. There’s no reason these decks couldn’t have given us optional ETB tapped lands, like the shock lands or check lands. Each deck ranges between 10 and 15 lands entering tapped. The biggest problem is that they all have way too many lands that enter the battlefield tapped. If you’ve read any of the individual deck breakdowns, you’ll know I’m really unhappy with the manabase in each deck. Let’s get the negatives out of the way first. We’ll look at how I would rank the decks, what my favorite (and least favorite) cards from the new set are, and what I would like to see from the Commander pre-cons going forward.
